How Does Water Softening Work?

JB Water Well’s Water Softeners work to remove calcium, magnesium, and other metals from hard water. These minerals in your water can make it difficult to clean clothes, dishes, and your body. This happens because the calcium ions in the water bond with the soap.

There are three components involved in a water softener. These components include a control valve, mineral tank, and brine tank. These components working together remove the calcium, magnesium, and other minerals from your hard water using a process called ion exchange.

When hard water goes into a tank with resin beads, the beads made of polystyrene and sodium ions remove minerals. Sodium ions are negative, while calcium and magnesium in water are positive, so they are drawn to each other.

The beads grab onto the mineral ions in your water and remove them as the water passes through the mineral tank. As a result, hard water goes into the mineral tank and softened water flows back out into your home.
